The coenzyme form of vitamin B-12 is known as methylcobalamin or methyl B-12. This form of vitamin B-12 directly participates in homocysteine metabolism. In recent years, high levels of homocysteine have been found to be associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis. Vitamin B-12 assists in converting homocysteine to methionine which increases the supply of SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine).
